The full Moon that occurs nearest to the equinox being the one to take on the name “Harvest Moon”, which happens either in September or October each year, when the harvest season begins in many cultures.

The Harvest Moon got its name because of how brightly it shines in the early evenings. The moonlight generated from the Harvest Moon gives farmers extra time in the evening to harvest their summer-grown crops.

In some cultures, the September full Moon is also known as the Barley Moon, the Full Corn Moon or Fruit Moon. In China it is known as the Moon of Autumn Equinox. It is considered an auspicious time to worship ancestors and deities.

Many tribes celebrate the Harvest Moon with feasts and ceremonies, and the Cherokee Nation celebrates the Moon with a festival called New Moon Ceremony. During this time, Cherokee people give thanks for the harvest and ask for blessings for the coming year.

In many cultures, the full Moon is a time to give thanks for the earth’s bounty. The September full moon reminds us that we are all connected to the rhythms of nature and the cycle of life.
